Bridging the Gap Between Holy and High Fives (A.K.A. Spiritual and Natural)

Hey there, friends! Ever feel like you're stuck playing tug-of-war with your soul? On one side, that nagging voice telling you to pray more, read your Bible every day, be super "holy." On the other hand, there's that awesome world outside, screaming for you to hike, connect with friends, and maybe even, gasp, have some fun?

Here's the thing: what if being a good Christian wasn't about choosing sides? What if it was more like… a killer high five?

Think about it. Have you ever seen those handshake-high five combos? That's what the Bible is telling us! It's not "spiritual OR natural," it's spiritual AND natural. Remember that whole creation story in Genesis 1? Boom! God creates this amazing world, from the majestic mountains to the tiniest ladybug. And then, poof, there we are – humanity! Made in His image, with both a spiritual side and a body that rocks.

Now, the word "good" gets thrown around a lot in that creation story. But in Hebrew, it's not just "good" like your grandma's cookies. It's "tov" (pronounced toeḇ), which means something both delightful and purposeful. Like a perfectly ripe apple – yummy and good for you! See where I'm going with this? God wants us to experience both the joy of the natural world and the deeper meaning of our spiritual connection to Him.

Think about Adam in the Garden of Eden. Dude wasn't just praying all day (although some quiet time with the Creator is always a good thing). He was also named "gardener" for a reason! God put him there to explore, care for creation, and enjoy the beauty of it all.

Fast forward a bit, and Genesis tells us about the whole "man and woman" thing. Now, some folks might look at that and say, "See? God separated them!" But hold on a sec. God actually recognized that Adam, all by himself, wasn't quite complete. So He created Eve from his rib, a part symbolizing his spiritual side. This highlights how both the spiritual and physical aspects are crucial for reflecting God's will. It's like a puzzle – both pieces gotta fit together for the whole picture.

The problem is, sometimes we get stuck focusing on just one piece. We might get hung up on legalistic interpretations of the Bible, like those Pharisees who tried to trap Jesus with tricky questions. Or maybe we completely neglect the natural world, forgetting that taking a walk in nature or spending time with loved ones can be just as spiritually fulfilling as a prayer meeting.

Here's the good news: there's a way back to wholeness. It's all about understanding God's design. Remember that whole "dying to the flesh" thing? It doesn't mean hating on your body (because, hello, temple!). It's about ditching the messed-up way of thinking we inherited from Adam and Eve. That distorted thinking makes us chase after material stuff instead of focusing on our relationship with God and the impact we can have on the world.

So, how do we bridge the gap? Enter the Holy Spirit – our personal GPS for navigating the spiritual world. The Holy Spirit helps us understand the deeper truths in the Bible, the ones that might be hidden by our messed-up way of thinking. By embracing this balance, we can finally start bearing the fruit God desires – a life filled with spiritual growth, knowledge, and a positive influence on the world around us.

The bottom line? Being a Christian isn't about being a spiritual hermit or a party animal. It's about embracing all that God created – the quiet moments of prayer and the high-fiving moments of joy in His creation. Let's move forward with a deeper understanding of ourselves, living out God's purpose with both our spiritual and natural sides working together. Now, that's a life worth celebrating!
